LAWRENCEVILLE -- Maybe it was the early start time, but the Gwinnett Braves won't complain after winning a wild 7-6, 13-inning game over the Charlotte Knights on Tuesday at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville.

First pitch came at 10:35 a.m., with an ugly G-Braves victory following more than four hours later.

The G-Braves (71-60) remained in second place in the International League South, pulling within 5.0 games of Durham. Gwinnett is also second in the Wild Card race by a 2.0 game margin behind Lehigh Valley (all figures at press time, pending late games).

Things got weird early on Tuesday, with an error committed in the first inning. One frame later Charlotte's Lastings Milledge was called out for vacating first base and was, consequently, removed from the game by his manager. It was just a sign of thing to come, as the teams combined for six errors and the G-Braves tallied only four of their runs via RBIs. Gwinnett's Matt Young sealed the win with a walk-off RBI on a fielder's choice, beating out double play in the bottom of the 13th.

Gwinnett's Todd Redmond started and went 5 2/3 innings, allowing 6 runs after being staked to a 6-0 lead in what became a no-decision. He gave away 9 hits, 1 walk, struck out 5 and yielded a home run.

The Gwinnett bullpen, meanwhile, combined for 7 1/3 innings of scoreless, one-hit ball with 10 strikeouts. Dustin Richardson (1-0) earned his first decision of the season with 1 1/3 innings, 2 walks and 3 strikeouts.

Wilkin Castillo finished 1-for-5 with his only hit coming on a three-run home run. The only other RBI came from Young. Mauro Gomez also finished 3-for-5 at with a stolen base.

The G-Braves are off Wednesday, but resume action against the Norfolk Tides on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. Gwinnett will send out LHP Yohan Flande (7-8, 4.00) against Tides RHP Steve Johnson (2-5, 5.66). The game can be heard on the voice of the Gwinnett Braves, WDUN 550 AM and 102.9 FM.
