Flood remapping plans are underway

ATLANTA - A massive remapping project is under way, re-evaluating the flood plains in counties and municipalities across metro Atlanta and the rest of the state, including some counties in North Georgia.

The joint effort with the Federal Emergency Management Agency is spearheaded by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources,

Officials say the project should be complete in 2012.

One area where the flood risk is being reassessed is a 107-mile stretch of the Upper Chattahoochee River Basin. Flood maps are also changing in other parts of Fulton, Cobb, Coweta, DeKalb, Douglas, Forsyth and Gwinnett counties. Although not part of this particular re-mapping, the Upper Chattahoochee River Basin also includes portions of Hall, White and Habersham counties.

Officials in those communities are gearing up for open houses, to be
scheduled this fall. They will display revised flood maps and will feature local government staff and representatives from DNR and FEMA.
