Week 0: Five area teams getting a jump on the season

Here's a brief look at Friday's games that kick off the 2011 prep girdiron season. Please be sure to check Access North Georgia.com's High School Football Preview section, published today on our website.

Friday's games

BUFORD at BLESSED TRINITY
-- WHEN: 7:30 p.m. Friday
-- WHERE: Roswell
-- BUFORD (0-0): The Wolves went 14-1 last season winning their fourth straight state championship. Buford is ranked No. 1 in Class AA.
-- BLESSED TRINITY (0-0): The Titans went 6-4 last season.
-- LAST MEETING: Buford won 21-0 on Oct. 23, 2009. The Wolves lead the series 3-0.
-- NOTABLE: This is the first step toward what the Wolves hope is yet another championship season. Should Buford claim another crown, they would become the first-ever school to win five straight football crowns in GHSA history. ... The Wolves return 32 seniors and 17 starters, including eight Division I recruits.


MURPHY, N.C. at FANNIN COUNTY
-- WHEN: 7:30 p.m. Friday
-- WHERE: Rebel Stadium, Blue Ridge
-- MURPHY, N.C. (0-0): Not available
-- FANNIN COUNTY (0-0): The Rebels went 6-5 last season, reaching the first round of the Class AA playoffs.
-- LAST MEETING: Murphy won 55-21 on Sept. 17, 2010. Murphy leads the series 1-0.
-- NOTABLE: Fannin County is looking to reclaim the Region 8-AA North title this season but knows it faces a tough challenge with a number of sophomores counting as the more experienced members of the team. Four rising sophomores will play key roles in 2011, including quarterback Trevor Stone, running back/free safety Peyton Satterfield, tight end Noah O'Neal and middle linebacker Jordan Gray.


CHEROKEE at NORTH FORSYTH
-- WHEN: 7:30 p.m. Friday
-- WHERE: Raider Valley, Coal Mountain
-- CHEROKEE (0-0): The Warriors went 3-7 last season.
-- NORTH FORSYTH (0-0): The Raiders went 5-6 last season, reaching the first round of the Class AAAAA playoffs.
-- LAST MEETING: North Forsyth won 14-3 on Aug. 20, 2010. The Raiders lead the series 1-0.
-- NOTABLE: North Forsyth is under new head coach Blair Armstrong, who comes over after turning the program at Banks County
