EPA: Ga. inspections lacking for large farms

ATLANTA - A federal agency's report says large livestock farms in Georgia could pose a pollution risk to nearby waterways because of insufficient oversight by state inspectors.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Sunday that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Inspector General found a "significant risk" that Georgia is failing to protect waterways from contamination by manure produced by cows, pigs and chickens on large farms.

The state Environmental Protection Division and the Georgia Department of Agriculture are in charge of monitoring how big farms dispose of manure. The EPA report found that three-fourths of inspections of 48 big farms statewide were faulty or incomplete.

State regulators say they are still reviewing the report but don't agree with all its findings.
