Starting pitcher Cordier earned his first win since the All-Star break, while recently promoted reliever J.J. Hoover earned his first save as a member of the G-Braves. The win also allowed Gwinnett (65-53) to pick up a game on the Durham Bulls (66-50) in the International League South standings.
The G-Braves took the lead for good in the top of the fourth when Yankees pitcher D.J. Mitchell hurled a wild pitch that allowed Gwinnett's Brandon Hicks to score. The G-Braves stayed on top the rest of the way thanks in large part to its pitching.
Cordier (4-8) went 6 innings, allowing 1 run on 2 hits with 4 walks and 3 strikeouts. Reliever Ben Swaggerty replaced Cordier in the seventh and earned his second hold of the season, going 1 1/3 innings while allowing 1 run (none earned) on 3 hits with 2 walks and a strikeout. Hoover relieved Swaggerty and earned his first save of the season with 1 2/3 innings and 3 strikeouts.
Meanwhile, Matt Young, Tyler Pastornicky, Stefan Gartrell and Wilkin Castillo led the G-Braves at the plate. Young finished 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Pastornicky extended his on-base streak to 16 games with a 2-for-4 performance. Gartrell also went 2-for-2 with a run, RBI and 2 walks. And Castillo capped the offense with a 2-for-3 performance with a run, RBI and his third home run of the season.
