Gwinnett lost the first game 4-3 in 8 innings, and held on to take the second contest 3-2. The outcomes saw the G-Braves (64-53) drop 3.0 games behind Durham in second place in the International League South. Gwinnett is also in second in the Wild Card race by a 2.5-game margin.
Game 1
In a wild, back and forth game, it took a wild pitch to settle things. G-Braves reliever Jaye Chapman uncorked one in the eighth inning (and extra frame in the game, which was scheduled for seven innings), allowing Yankee Dan Brewer to score from third base in the 4-3 SWB win.
Gwinnett starting pitcher Yohan Flande went 6.0 innings once again back in the rotation, allowing 3 runs on 4 hits with 2 walks and 2 strikeouts. Chapman (1-2) allowed 1 run in 1 2/3 innings in the loss.
G-Braves centerfielder Jeff Fiorentino paced the G-Braves with a 2-for-3 night with an RBI, while left fielder Matt Young also had 2 hits in the game.
Game 2
Fiorentino proved the big contributor again as -- after SWB rallied to tie the game at 2-2 in the top of the sixth inning -- the outfielder rapped a double to score Brandon Hicks for the deciding run.
Gwinnett starter Steven Shell went 5 1/3 effective innings, allowing only 1 run on 2 hits with a walk and 5 strikeouts. Closer Jairo Asencio (3-2) also blew his first save of the year, but earned the win in 2/3 innings of work, yielding 1 run. Cory Gearrin also notched his first save of the year with a scoreless seventh inning.
Fiorentino finished 1-for-2 with an RBI; Young was 2-for-3 with his first home run of the season and an RBI and Tyler Pastornicky was 3-for-3 with a stolen base.
