GAINESVILLE - As the country marks the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, Brenau University is preparing to offer a course, open to the public, on the role of women in the war, not those who stayed behind as their menfolk marched off to the battlefields but those who went to war themselves.

It's part of the Brenau University Learning and Leisure Institute (BULLI) and will offer details about women who spied, bore arms and charged into battle and died for their cause. Retired English teacher LaMerle Loveland, who has taught several BULLI courses, will be the instructor for the Monday, 1:00-2:30 course.

Registration for the BULLI fall term begins at 4:00 Thursday in Thurmond-McRae Lecture Hall, adjacent to the Brenau Trustee Library on Academy Street.

The fall term will run from Sept. 26-Nov. 11, offering a far-ranging catalog of courses that includes drawing and painting in pastels, a primer on social media and a look at different methods that have been used during the last half century for military and domestic surveillance.

Following Thursday's opening session, registration and membership enrollment will continue on weekdays through Aug. 17 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the BULLI House on the Brenau campus, 406 Academy St. However, Kathy Amos, the BULLI director, says classes fill up quickly on a first come, first served basis. Those who register after Aug. 17 stand less a chance of getting all the classes they want,

The membership fee for the 2011-2012 academic year is $130. The course fee for each course taken is $35. Members may take as many courses as they like, said Amos.

Here is a rundown of courses - in addition to the one on women in the Civil War - that will be offered in the fall term:
