Madera County sheriff's spokeswoman Erica Stuart says 46-year-old Billy Williams was trying to cross a creek above Corlieu Falls Saturday when he slipped, fell into the creek and plunged down a 30-foot waterfall.
Jim Greer, a Madera County volunteer firefighter, was hiking with his wife and son, when he saw Williams go into the water and down the waterfall.
Stuart says Greer pulled Williams out of the water and was able to revive him by performing CPR.
Williams, whose hometown was not immediately available, was transported by a helicopter to a local hospital, where he was in critical but stable condition.
The incident took place just south of Yosemite National Park, where three tourists were killed last week when they were swept down a 317-foot waterfall.
