The road is being rebuilt after decades of use. Georgia DOT is working with C.W. Matthews Contracting to make-over the roadway. The project will remove up to eight inches of damaged asphalt and lay down a new, smooth driving surface on State Route 365/US 23 from SR 52 in Hall County to the split at SR 17 and US 441 in Habersham County.
DOT spokeswoman Teri Pope said Friday "the paving's going really well and we haven't been rained out."
The first of three layers of asphalt has been applied to the southern six miles of the project from State Route 52 in Hall County to Alto Mud Creek Road in Habersham County. The crumbling asphalt is removed first then a "base layer" goes down. The middle layer is the binder and the final driving surface, or the topping will go on top and is placed last. The base is down on all four through lanes of SR 365 from SR 52 to Alto Mud Creek Road.
Now crews are removing the old asphalt and laying base down at the median crossovers from SR 52 to Alto Mud Creek Road. Six median crossovers are completed. Tonight crews will begin at Tribble Gap Road then continue north. The goal is to do three median cross over sections per night. Weather permitting, the median crossovers up to Alto Mud Creek Road will have base down by early next week. Once these crossovers are complete, crews will pave the outside right turn lanes from SR 52 to Alto Mud Creek Road. The outside turning lanes will complete the base asphalt installation on the southern section of the work.
"CW Matthews Contracting is bringing in a second paving crew late next week to expedite work," DOT District Engineer Todd McDuffie said. "The new crew will be laying down the "binder" layer from State Route 52 to Alto Mud Creek Road while the other crew continues to remove damaged asphalt and replace the base layer of asphalt. We will have two work zones on State Route 365 overnights so please slow down and use extra caution for your safety and ours."
As new pavement is laid it will be at different heights until both lanes are completed. Beware of the uneven pavement between the lanes.
The contract completion date is June 30, 2012.
