GAINESVILLE - While most of the city slept, something new appeared over Jesse Jewell Parkway in downtown Gainesville Monday night: the sections of a pedestrian bridge that will connect downtown with midtown.

Work on the span began several months ago but until now has concentrated on the supports for the bridge on either side of the busy four-lane.

Plans for the bridge were finalized last October. (See earlier story.)
