UNDATED - Gwinnett County police officers are getting a little help from technology when it comes to reading license plates.

The Gwinnett County Police Department has purchased three Automatic License Plate Readers with cash forfeitures from drug sales and will begin using them this week, according to authorities.

The $20,000 machines allow officers to capture and read up to 1,800 license plates per minute, records a time stamp and photo of the vehicle and instantly compare it with millions of Hot List records to identify vehicles of interest.

Gwinnett County officials said this can help lead to such things as witness identification and placing a suspect at a scene.
