Fundraiser for homeless vets event called off

GAINESVILLE - Tonight's kickoff fundraiser for an event this fall to help homeless veterans in the Gainesville area has been canceled because of a lack of ticket sales, donations and sponsorship.

One of the organizers, Johnny Varner, says he's concerned because the funds that would have been raised by the dinner were going to be used to support the logistical elements for the North Georgia Stand Down in Oakwood September 24-25.

There is no word on how this development might affect those plans.
