Much-needed rains in north Ga.

GAINESVILLE - It probably wasn't a drought breaker but parts of north Georgia got more rain over the weekend than they've received in several months. Gainesville was among them.

A strong thunderstorm that moved through Hall County early Saturday left behind 1.71 inches at Lee Gilmer Memorial Airport in Gainesville. That was the largest single-day total since March 9, when 1.99 inches were recorded.

The storm also pounded parts of Forsyth County but was apparently isolated to just a few places in our area.

Meanwhile, the weekend saw a continuation of the pop-up showers that have been occurring almost daily for the past week or so in some mountain areas, specifically Habersham and Rabun counties, which have prompted the National Weather Service to issue almost-daily thunderstorm warnings.

White County was pounded by some pretty strong storms over the weekend, as well.

One of them, on Saturday afternoon, drenched downtown Cleveland in heavy rain, (1.43 inches in about 30 minutes), strong winds that blew down at least three trees, while flooding a section of South Main Street, forcing a re-routing of traffic for a brief time.

A storm on Sunday, just north of Cleveland, included heavy rain, hail and high winds, again, with a few trees blown down and as well as isolated power outages.

There were no reports of any injuries in either case.
