Gomez leads the G-Braves in nearly every offensive category, and tonight he led them off the field and onto a road trip in style with his game-ending homer. The G-Braves (29-28) remain in second place in the International League South division at 2.0 games behind Durham with the win, while the Bisons (26-33) remain in fourth place in the IL North.
Gomez stepped to the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning with the game knotted at 3-3 on the same night that his new offensive competition, G-Braves left fielder Stefan Gartrell, tied his team record for three straight games with a home run. Gomez answered back in the friendly competition between teammates in style, crushing the very first pitch of the inning over the wall and at the feet of the Coolray Field scoreboard for the game-winner.
G-Braves starter Yohan Flande went 5 innings, yielding 2 runs (1 earned) and scattered 6 hits without allowing a walk and tallying 3 strikeouts. Ben Swaggerty followed Flande and threw an inning, allowing 2 hits, a run and a strikeout. Juan Abreu was next in line and threw 2 innings, allowing a single hit, with a walk and a strikeout. Finally, Jaye Chapman earned the win (1-0), pitching a scoreless inning while allowing a hit and striking out one.
Gartrell -- a midseason acquisition from the rival Charlotte Knights -- finished up 1-for-3 with his 12th homer of the season, as well as a walk and 2 RBIs. Gomez finished the night going 2-for-4 with a runs scored, and an RBI.
The G-Braves hit the road to begin an eight game road trip, with the team heading to Toledo to begin a four game set that starts tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. Gwinnett will throw RHP Erik Cordier (0-1, 2.79) against Mud Hens RHP L.J. Gagnier (0-0, 14.40). The game can be heard on WDUN 550 AM and 102.9 FM.
