COLUMBUS - With a month to go before Georgia's law cracking down on illegal immigration enters into effect, law enforcement agencies are working to determine how it will affect them.

Police departments and sheriff's offices around the state are drawing up policies to provide guidelines for their officers and deputies about what the new law enforcement provisions will and will not allow when they take effect July 1.

Several dozen managers from law enforcement agencies around the state gathered for a training session at Columbus State University Wednesday to learn about new legal issues that affect them, including the immigration law.

Many said provisions of the new law likely won't require significant changes in the way they operate. But they said it's important for officers to know what the law says.
