GAINESVILLE - Gainesville and Hall County officials say they'll delay mediation over issues involving Cedar Creek Reservoir until the fate of Lake Lanier as a source of drinking water is clarified.

The county and city are trying to work out a deal over who has control of the water in Cedar Creek and how it will fit into a larger system with the proposed Glades Reservoir.

Georgia is asking a federal appeals court to overturn a 2009 ruling by U.S. District Judge Paul Magnuson that gave the state three years to work out an agreement with Alabama and Florida over the decades-long water wars or face not being able to withdraw water from Lanier.

Gainesville and Buford would be able to continue making withdrawals but at mid-1970s levels.
