Hall Co.man named state DOT Director of Engineering

ATLANTA - A Hall County man has been named Director of Engineering for the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT).

Russell McMurry is a 20-year veteran of GDOT and a former District Engineer for the Northeast Georgia District office.

He began his career with DOT in 1990 as a Civil Engineer Trainee. He became Construction Project Manager in 1991. He was named Area Engineer for Clarke, Jackson, Oconee and Walton counties in 1998. McMurry was responsible for all construction on over 470 miles of state routes and interstates in his four-county Area. After three years as Area Engineer, McMurry was promoted to District Construction Engineer where he was responsible for all construction projects underway in the 21 counties in Northeast Georgia s District One. In 2003, he became District Preconstruction Engineer; supervising the design, planning and right of way acquisition for all construction projects.

McMurry also served as Assistant District Engineer and became District Engineer for Northeast Georgia in 2004. After 5 years, he moved to state DOT headquarters in Atlanta as Assistant Division Director for Engineering.

His promotion to State Division Director, Director of Engineering was effective Monday. In this capacity, he will oversee much of the preconstruction work statewide for bridges and roadway projects. His team develops environmental studies, rights of way plans, purchases needed rights of way, develops construction plans, bid documents and supports program delivery through policy, guidelines and engineering technical support.

McMurry is a Cum Laude graduate of Georgia Southern University with a Bachelor s of Science Degree in Civil Engineering Technology. He earned his Professional Engineer s License in the State of Georgia in 2001.

His engineering acumen combined with his people skills and experience in preconstruction and construction make Russell the best person to oversee our Division of Engineering," explained state DOT Commissioner Vance Smith.  "I am proud to have him as a member of our Executive Management Team. I' m certain that he will do a fine job."

McMurry is a native of Hart County and graduated from the Franklin County School System. He is married to Michelle (Satterfield) McMurry, a 1991 Graduate of Georgia Southern with a Bachelors of Science in Early Childhood Education. Michelle also earned a Master s of Science Degree in Early Childhood Education from the University of Georgia. Michelle and Russell are the proud parents of three sons, Zacharey, Nicholas and Andrew. The McMurrys live in Hall County and are members of Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Buford.
