Ramone Gilbert hopes to succeed Stan Evans who has said he won't seek re-election next year.
The chief deputy in the Hall County Sheriff's Office, Jeff Strickland, has already announced plans to run for the office being vacated by his and Gilbert's boss, Steve Cronic.
Gilbert's law enforcement career spans 24 years.
