The state's gas tax is set to rise by about 3 cents a gallon on Sunday when the gas tax automatically increases. It's part of a complicated formula that kicks in twice each year. In May and January each year the state gas tax is adjusted pegged to the average price of gas, and when that price rises, the tax jumps as well.
There's little state officials can do to stop the hike, aside from an executive order by the governor to freeze the rate.
Gov. Nathan Deal said it was unlikely he would do so, but said lawmakers can vote to adjust the formula if they choose.
