UNDATED - With the governor promising to sign the Sunday alcohol sales bill, cities across Georgia are already talking about possibly putting the issue on the ballot in this fall's municipal elections.

Snellville Mayor Jerry Oberholtzer tells Georgia News Network he will recommend to his City Council that their referendum be held in November. He wants grocery stores in his city to have a leg up on the competition.

"If the county (Gwinnett) doesn't do it until February, that gives our stores an advantage and hopefully helps...get through this recession," Oberholtzer said.

The earliest most counties are expected to schedule a referendum is during the presidential primaries next February but many cities will have elections in November and could hold theirs then.

Oberholtzer says this is no longer about alcohol. He says it's about commerce and jobs. He says if neighboring grocery stores can sell alcohol on Sundays, city grocery stores (in Snellville) must be able to compete.
