CLEVELAND - A White County Grand Jury is recommending changes in the way the county commission is elected.

The grand jury recommends the countywide election of the commission chairman and calls for the four other commissioners to also be elected countywide. But it says they should be required to live in the district they represent.

In presentments returned this week in Cleveland, the grand jury also called on the county commission to schedule a referendum on the issue.

The commission discussed the matter last month but not all board members are in agreement with how the commissioners should be elected. Commission Chairman Travis Turner said the legislative delegation advised him to hear from the public. Turner says the commission will be setting up a public hearing on the issue later this year. He added the earliest that a referendum could be held would be next year.
