ATLANTA - A group of roughly 250 businessmen from various sectors of Georgia's agriculture industries has sent a letter to Georgia lawmakers asking them to consider the effects on the state's economy that proposed legislation targeting illegal immigration could have.

The letter distributed to lawmakers Monday says requiring businesses to use a federal database called E-Verify to check the immigration status of new hires would hurt the state's economy.

Bills proposed by state Rep. Matt Ramsey and state Sen. Jack Murphy both require such verification for employers who have more than four employees.

The letter also says the legislation could have a negative impact on the convention business, tourism and international business opportunities for the state.

Ramsey and Murphy did not immediately return calls seeking comment Tuesday.
