GAINESVILLE - The poet and former soldier whose work inspired the Oscar-winning movie ``The Hurt Locker'' is scheduled to speak at Brenau University in Gainesville today.

Brian Turner will give a reading at 1:00, followed by a 4:00 question-and-answer session. The events, which are free and open to the public, are at the Banks Recital Hall in the performing arts center on the Brenau campus.

Turner earned his master's degree in poetry from the University of Oregon before enlisting in the U.S. Army. He served seven years, first in Bosnia-Herzegovina and then in Iraq.

He published his award-winning book of poems ``Here, Bullet,'' in 2005. Kathryn Bigelow, who directed the movie, took its title from one of Turner's poems.
