BRASELTON - For 25 years, Mitsubishi has had a presence in Jackson County, but that will come to an end this summer.

Mitsubishi has announced that it will close its electronics plant in the Park 85 at Braselton Industrial Park.

Courtney Bernardi, the Director of Economic Development for the Jackson County Chamber, said the closure will affect 35 plant employees.

"It's going to increase the awareness that jobs need to be created here in Jackson County, and that although we're improving and constantly creating jobs, there's also some hard times still out there," said Bernardi.

She said Mitsubishi will actually lay off a total of 169 U.S. workers in this latest move to downsize the company.

"Not all of those are in Jackson County... there's a facility in California that's closing as well," said Bernardi.

She said the Braselton layoffs will become final Aug. 5.

At its peak, Mitsubishi employed nearly 650 people at the Jackson County facility.
