A revamped tax overhaul plan is set to come before a joint legislative committee Thursday afternoon.
An advisory council named by the Legislature had recommended reinstating the state sales tax on groceries as part of an overall rewrite of Georgia's tax code that would also lower the personal and corporate income tax. But the idea was unpopular in the Republican-led House and Senate.
The revised proposal set to be discussed Thursday would also eliminate plans to tax goods sold by non-profits, like Girl Scout cookies.
The Special Council on Tax Reform and Fairness for Georgians earlier this year made sweeping recommendations designed to update the state's tax code.
