Superintendent Merrianne Dyer said while the pre-k program has been shortened to 160 days, pre-k teachers and paraprofessionals will assist in kindergarten through fifth grade classrooms for the other 30 days.
"They'll be working as co-teachers in special education classes, in classes of gifted education, in classes of English-language learners," she said.
Dyer says those types of programs will generate funding for having an additional teacher in the classroom.
The Gainesville City School Board voted for the measure 4-1 Monday night.
Gov. Nathan Deal proposed the cuts to the pre-k program during this year's legislative session as a way to salvage the cash-strapped program.
