Dawsonville native hitting the target for TCU

FORT WORTH, Texas -- Dawsonville native Mattie Brogdon was honored recently when the Texas Christian University student was named a second-team All-American for her efforts in rifle competition.

Brogdon, a junior, earned the honor in both smallbore and air rifle for the Horned Frogs, which had four team members named All-Americans. Additionally, Karen Monez was selected as the Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association Coach of the Year.

Monez guided the Frogs to an undefeated regular season and a third place finish at the 2010 NCAA National Championships. In 2007, Monez was honored as the NRA Distinguished Coach of the Year. Since her arrival in 2007, eight athletes have earned 25 All-American honors.

The Horned Frogs have finished fifth or better in the last five NCAA Championships under Monez's guidance. Twice the program has finished 3rd at the Championships (2008, 2011) and twice it has finished fifth (2007, 2009). The 2010 squad was crowned National Champions.

Sarah Scherer was a first-team All-American in both smallbore and air rifle for the second straight season. She took home fourth place individually in air rifle at the NCAA Championships this past weekend.

Caitlin Morrissey was named first-team All-American in air rifle for the second straight season. She finished sixth individually in smallbore at the NCAA Championships.

Sarah Beard was honored as an All-American for the second straight season. Beard earned first-team honors in smallbore and was tabbed second-team in air rifle.
Mattie Brogdon was honored as an All-American for the first time in her career.
