GAINESVILLE - One Gainesville woman with family in Hawaii says she was checking on them during the night as the tsunami from the Japanese earthquake approached.

Jennifer Castillo-Passmore says her mother and other family members said they were prepared. Castillo-Passmore says they live at a higher elevation on the island of Oahu but have friends and other relatives who live nearer the coast.

The tsunami hit Hawaii about 9:00 EST with five- and six-foot waves in most places. (See separate story.)

Tsunami warnings were also posted all along the U.S. West Coast.
