City set to mark 75th anniversary of '36 tornado

GAINESVILLE - This year will mark the 75th anniversary of the 1936 tornado which devastated downtown Gainesville and killed more than 200 people and injured hundreds.

To commemorate the anniversary, Main Street Gainesville and the Northeast Georgia History Center will host a dedication ceremony for a memorial plaque April 6 at 8:15 a.m., which is about the time the twister struck. The ceremony will be held on the downtown square. That evening, the history center will host a reception from 5:00 'til 6:30 to mark the occasion.
