LAWENCEVILLE - Gwinnett County is now within $2.5 million of eliminating what was an $18 million budget deficit.

The commission approved more budget-cutting measures last night.

Among them: reducing the number of paid holidays by taking four of the remaining eight scheduled holidays this year and using them as unpaid furlough days for Gwinnett employees.

Other cost-cutting measures approved by the county commission last night include voluntary departmental budget reductions, reducing the county's contributions to its Risk Management and Workers' Compensationi funds, and eliminating at least seven vacant positions.
