WINDER - A Barrow County elementary school student was taken into custody Tuesday after bringing an airsoft gun to school.

Officials with the Barrow County Sheriff's Department said the juvenile was showing the weapon to other students at County Line Elementary around 11:30 a.m. and threatened to kill one of them.

They said students notified members of the school's administration who then contacted authorities. The student was released into the custody of his parents.

According to the Barrow County Sheriff's Office, airsoft guns are air-powered weapons, which operate like BB guns, but they fire softer projectiles and are considered to be non-lethal. They said the guns are very realistic in appearance, particularly when built-in distinguishing features, such as orange barrels, are tampered with.

"Any time a weapon is brought onto school grounds we take it very seriously," said Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith. "The safety of the children and staff of our school system is of the utmost importance to the Barrow County Sheriff's Office."

Authorities said charges pending against the youngster include pointing a gun at another person, possession of a weapon on school property and terroristic threats.
