JEFFERSON - The 174 inmates at the Jackson County Correctional Institute and the two dozen guards who work there are moving.

Warden Johnny Weaver says the inmates will be moved this week to the old I.W. Davis Probation Center, which he says is more secure than the correctional institute's current home. Weaver says the move will allow the county to house more state inmates.

The current building is split into two levels. Weaver says guards had to move inmates through unsecured parts of the institute on a fairly regular basis.

The state Department of Corrections pays Jackson County $20 per inmate per day to house state prisoners. The inmates spend most of their time working outdoors, performing maintenance work on county buildings or working and training as firefighters.
