Girls basketball: Union beats Dawson in Battle of States tourney

HIAWASSEE -- The Union County girls outscored Dawson County 19-8 in the third quarter to blow open a close game en route to a 63-47 win in the Battle of the States Tournament at Towns County high school.

Union led just 18-17 after the first quarter and took a 34-28 lead into halftime. The Lady Panther used the third quarter to take a 53-36 lead into the fourth quarter.

Dawsson County was just 18 of 61 from the field in the game.

Rebecca Merritt paced Union County (10-1) with a season-high 30 points. Angie Hughes had 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Lady Panthers.

Carly Gilreath scored nine points and Allie Costley had nine points and 11 rebounds for Dawson County. Sheyenne Seabolt added eight points and five rebounds for the Lady Tigers (8-5).
