SMYRNA - A fire that destroyed a Smyrna apartment building displaced 27 people two days before Christmas.

More than 30 firefighters on Friday battled heavy smoke and flames that ravaged the Regency Square Apartments.

Cobb County fire spokesman Denell Boyd said the fire started in a ground-floor apartment and spread quickly to nearby units.

Red Cross volunteers are helping the displaced families, and five of them were relocated to vacant units in the complex.

Investigators aren't certain yet what started the fire.
