On Sunday, from 1:00-4:00, the history center will observe "Family Day: A Salute to Veterans and Their Families." That will be the final day of some special Veterans Week exhibits at the history center, and World War II and Vietnam veterans will be present.
Hands-on activities Sunday will include creating a large American flag, participating in the Letters from Home project, and crafts.
The Letters from Home project includes writing notes of thanks to active duty military personnel and sending care packages including small snack items, personal care items, writing material, and magazines or books.
Admission on Sunday will also be free, courtesy of North Georgia Eye Clinic and Laser Center.
Meanwhile, on Friday, Gainesville State College and North Georgia College & State University will participate along with scores of other colleges and universities around the country in a reading of the names of fallen veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. (See earlier story.)
In addition, there will be an observance at 2:00 at Veterans Park in Lula and the annual Gainesville ceremony, sponosred by American Legion Post #7, which is usually held downtown at Roosevelt Square, will be held at Lakewood Baptist Church this year. It begins at 11:00.
