ATHENS - A suspect in the weekend murder of a Commerce soldier is now in police custody.

Athens-Clarke County Police had issued a murder warrant for Cody Lumpkin, and ACCP spokeswoman Hilda Sorrow said officers surrounded a house around 9:00 Wednesday morning with Lumpkin barricaded inside.

"It was on Altar Stone Drive, which is on the west side of Athens," Sorrow said.

She said negotiations with police went on for about three hours, and Lumpkin turned himself in to officers just after noon.

Lumpkin is believed to have killed 19-year-old Army soldier Jeremy Sean Buchanan of Commerce on Sunday night. Buchanan was shot once in the head, according to police reports.

Watch for more details on this developing story.
