Sgt. Chad Johnson of the Georgia State Patrol said Christa Dawn Anderson was traveling north on Highway 365 in a Chevrolet Tahoe LT.
"For unknown reasons, she traveled into the median, traveled in the median for some time then overcorrected back to the right, causing the vehicle to rotate across both northbound lanes," Johnson said. "She then struck a guardrail, which she traveled over. The vehicle then struck several trees, at some point there ejected her out of the vehicle."
Anderson was airlifted from the scene by AirLife Georgia to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. She was said to be conscious at the scene.
The wreck happened about 9:15 and the northbound lanes of Georgia 365 between Charley Davis Road and Duncan Bridge Road did not reopen until about 10:45.
