The Falcons joined Gainesville (Region 8B-AAA), Banks County (8A-AA), North Hall and Stephens County (8A-AAA) as teams that used wins to distance themselves from the rest of the pack.
The Class AAAA fourth-ranked Falcons took control of Region 8-AAAA with a nail-biting 21-13 win over Heritage-Conyers on the road. Flowery Branch stopped the Patriots on a fourth down inside the Falcons' 10 in the final minute to preserve the win. The two teams' came in undefeated and tied for the region lead.
Gainesville whipped Monroe Area 41-21 in a battle for first place in 8B-AAA while North Hall and Stephens County both got wins in 8A-AAA and are a collision path to meet with perfect subregion records in the regular season finale.
Banks County held off Rabun County 40-28 to take a one-game lead over East Hall with the two teams scheduled to meet in the regular season finale in two weeks.
On the other end, several teams had their playoff hopes damaged with tough losses on Friday.
West Hall and White County both saw their Region 8-AAA subregion hopes dashed with losses on Friday while Jefferson suffered its first shutout in six years in a 14-0 loss to Elbert County and fell to third place in Region 8B-AA. Mill Creek's last-second loss to Collins Hill also put the Hawks in a bad position, needing a sweep of its final region games to stay in the postseason race.
And, in Oakwood, Johnson dropped to 0-7 as Walnut Grove picked up its first-ever road win as a program in a 29-14 outcome.
