Volleyball: Jefferson advances to 4th straight state tourney

The Jefferson girls volleyball team advanced to the state tournament for the fourth straight year after knocking off a tough George Walton Academy team in the quarterfinals of the Area 8-A/AA tournament Thursday night.

The Lady Dragons (30-7) survived numerous lead changes in taking a nip-and-tuck win 25-17, 27-29, 26-24 in three games.

Eden Starnes led Jefferson with five kills in Game 1 while Cassie Metcalf solidified the defense and Taylor Cramsey and Sarah Wood combined for 10 kills in the Game 3 win.

The Lady Dragons next will take on Athens Academy Saturday in the semifinals.

Meanwhile, East Hall was knocked from the tournament by Prince Avenue Christian in a 25-18, 25-20 loss on Thursday. Lakeview Academy also suffered a season-ending defeat, falling to Hart County 25-15, 25-8 in tournament play.
