BRASELTON - The Town of Braselton, City of Hoschton, West Jackson Primary School and West Jackson Intermediate School have teamed up to renew their application for the Safe Routes To School Infrastructure Grant Program.

Starting last year, they formulated a plan to use the program funds to develop pedestrian facilities within a one mile radius of the schools to link eleven single family subdivisions containing 496 lots and three apartment complexes containing 57 units to the West Jackson Primary School and the West Jackson Intermediate School located in between the Town of Braselton and the City of Hoschton.

The plans include infrastructure that gives greater accessibility from the schools to public spaces that the students often frequent, such as, the Braselton Library, the Braselton Park and the Hoschton Park.

Hoschton Mayor Erma Denney and Braselton councilwoman Peggy Slappey walked in the recent Hoschton Fall Festival parade to promote awareness of the proposed project. Children attending the schools will take home a transportation survey for parents to complete over the next few weeks.

The results of the survey will be complied and submitted with the grant application. Officials say it is important for parents to be aware that their responses on the survey are critical for submission of a funding request for this project. If the grant is awarded, the sidewalks would be funded with federal transportation money and there is no requirement for any matching contributions from local government or boards of education and does not in any way affect current school transportation opportunities.
