One victim of flash fire dies

BUFORD - The man lifeflighted to Grady in Atlanta with critical burns suffered in a flash fire in Buford has died.

The man, whose name has not been released, was injured, along with his step-son, during the incident outisde Flintstone Paver Installations Thursday morning.

Capt. Tommy Rutledge of the Gwinnett County Fire Department confirmed his death Friday morning.

The deceased man, according to Rutledge, suffered critical burns over 90 percent of his body. The step-son sustained minor burns as he rushed to the aid of his father. He was transported to Grady by ambulance.

Capt. Rutledge says preliminary information indicates that the stepfather was outside working on a vehicle at the time the incident occurred. He is believed to have moved away from the vehicle and may have had a gas can at the time. It is unknown at this point what caused the flash fire or what role the fuel can may have played in the sequence of events.

Investigators believe there was a flash fire, but no actual explosion, as was thought during the initial phase of the investigation.
