GAINESVILLE - The East Hall High School Wind Symphony has been selected as a feature performing ensemble at this year's University of Georgia January Music Festival.

East Hall is one of only five schools from across the Southeast chosen to participate.

The festival will be held in Athens Saturday, January 22, on the UGA campus.

"This is a tremendous honor for our program," East Hall High School Director of Bands J. Craig Cantrell said. "This accomplishment, which has been one of many professional goals since my arrival at East Hall in the Fall of 2003, speaks to the dedication of our diligent students and parents. Through the years, our band students, both past and present, have worked feverishly in the task of performing the most challenging music and excelling in all national and state standards."

The festival, known as "JanFest," attracts nearly 1,200 high school band members and their directors to Athens each year to participate in Honor Bands featuring national and international guest conductors.

"Only the very best ensembles from across the country are invited to perform as a featured ensemble at this prestigious event," Cantrell added. "This honor is usually reserved for schools with a much higher student population and a larger pool of resources, as many of these featured schools have more than one band director and several private music instructors on their staff. Nonetheless, I believe our determined students will make us all very proud when they perform on this grand stage this weekend."

The performance is at 2:00 in the UGA Performing Arts Center.
