GAINESVILLE - State DOT says it is "seeing improvement" in conditions around northeast Georgia as the region begins its third day of ice-covered roads.

But the spokeswoman for the Gainesville district office, Teri Pope, says there is still a lot of ice out there... both black ice and white ice. At the same time, many major roads have sections that free and clear of any ice... with long stretches of completely dry pavement.

This was true early today of Browns Bridge Road, Dawsonville Highway, John Morrow Parkway, and Thompson Bridge Road.

Portions of two downtown Gainesville streets, Spring and Green, remain closed. Barricades went up yesterday after large chunks of snow and ice began falling into the streets and onto the sidewalks from the federal building. (See separate story.)
