GAINESVILLE - A robbery suspect who was injured when his car wrecked during a chase with Gainesville police overnight is hospitalized in Atlanta.

The chase began near Northeast Georgia Medical Center when officers responding to a report of a robbery at the Kangaroo convenience store at 1680 Parkhill Drive spotted a car believed connected to the incident.

"The cashier stated that a black male had jumped over the counter and demanded money," police spokesman Kevin Holbrook said. "The suspect demanded the cashier to open the register. He then took the cash and left the business. The suspect did not produce a weapon. He then left the business to an awaiting car."

Holbrook said a lookout on the getaway car was given to officers and "while en route, an officer spotted the suspect vehicle near Northeast Georgia Medical Center. Officers then attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle. The suspect initially stopped, then drove off. Officers briefly chased the vehicle. The suspect subsequently lost control of his vehicle on Parkhill Drive and struck a utility pole".

Holbrook said Quentin Antonio Mallory, 33, Gainesville, has been charged with robbery by intimidation and theft by taking.
