GAINESVILLE - It's that time again, when local governments around the state reorganize themselves for the new year.

The Gainesville City Council has a number of annual appointments to make Tuesday when it meets for the first time in 2011 Tuesday, including for Mayor Pro-Tem, city manager, city attorney and deputy court solicitor. A couple of two-year term officer-holders will be appointed this year... municipal court judge and municipal court solicitor.

Also on the Gainesville City Council agenda is consideration of a plan to change the zoning of a 65-acre parcel in Mundy Mill Development to allow for apartments instead of condominiums and town houses.

Tuesday's meeting will also be the first regular council meeting to be held in the new, permanent meeting place... the municipal courtroom in the new public safety complex on Queen City Parkway.

For the dean of the city council, Bob Hamrick, the 200-seat courtroom is a far cry from the cramped meeting room in City Hall where the council met when Hamrick was first elected in 1969.

" Up on third floor, we probably had a seating capacity of about 25," Hamrick recalled. " This is just magnificent.

The council long ago began holding its meetings at the Georgia Mountains Center. So, the latest venue will be the third regular council meeting place since Hamrick joined the council.
