Spurrier: Shaw won't start this weekend

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- The quarterback controversy has ended in a hurry at South Carolina.

Coach Steve Spurrier said Tuesday that Stephen Garcia will start on Oct. 9 when the No. 20 Gamecocks play No. 1 Alabama.

Spurrier pulled Garcia in the fourth quarter of last weekend's loss to Auburn after he fumbled twice. Freshman Connor Shaw, a Flowery Branch High graduate, came in and threw interceptions on successive possessions.

The coach says Garcia has played well this season except for the fumbles, and that he's still trying to get the quarterback to stop running with his head down.

Spurrier is still unhappy with his offensive line. He says either losing doesn't hurt them enough or they aren't smart enough to play their assignments.
