Trojans get back on track in a big way

LOGANVILLE -- If there was any worry about a post-Gainesville hangover for North Hall it was laid to rest in quick fashion on Friday night at Walnut Grove.

The Trojans scored 27 points in the first quarter, including two touchdowns in the first four offensive plays, on their way to a 40-0 drubbing of the Warriors.

Jesse Strickland set the tone on the first play of the game as he returned the opening kickoff 85 yards to the Walnut Grove 14-yard line.

Two plays later, Imani Cross (seeing his first action of the season after recovering from achilles surgery) found the end zone with a 14-yard run. The two-point conversion did not work, but the Trojans led 6-0.

After North Hall forced a Warrior punt, it took only two more plays for the Trojans to score again, this time from a 38-yard touchdown run by Mack VanGorder, giving North Hall a 13-0 lead.

Walnut Grove's next possession ended with a blocked punt by North Hall leading to yet another quick score, as quarterback Kanler Coker found C.J. Curry in the end zone for a four-yard touchdown pass and a 20-0 first quarter lead.

North Hall would add one more score in the quarter as Coker hooked up with Randy Olson for a 70-yard strike and a 27-0 lead heading into the second quarter.

Coker would throw his third touchdown early in the second quarter, as he capped off a 80-yard drive with a screen pass to Cross that went for 14 yards and a 34-0 lead.

Coker finished with 143 passing yards to go along with his touchdown passes, while Cross finished with 18 rushing yards, 14 receiving yards and two scores.

Yet the big offensive numbers belonged to VanGorder, who finished the scoring for the Trojans in the second quarter, breaking loose for a 66-yard run with just three seconds left in the half. VanGorder ended with 135 rushing yards and his two touchdowns.

Ty Bennett had 48 rushing yards to lead the Warriors (0-4).

While the first half took over 90 minutes to play, the second half took less than 40 minutes, thanks to a running clock.

It wasn't all pretty for the Trojans, however, as they were whistled for nine penalties in the game, totaling 81 yards.

The Trojans (2-2) travel to face Chestatee next week in their second straight road game. Walnut Grove will visit West Hall.
