GAINESVILLE - Gainesville Police Chief Brian Kelly wants the city to change the way Gainesville provides wrecker service by putting that service out for bids.

Kelly told council members recently it would clear up misconceptions and improve wrecker service in the city.

"We try to impress upon the public that they are not our wrecker services, but the public sees these services as working directly for the police department," Kelly said.

Kelly said right now eleven wrecker services are on call by his department on a two-week rotation basis. He proposes to use two wrecker services under an annual contract.
