G-Braves officially out of playoff contention

NORFOLK, Va. -- The Gwinnett Braves were officially eliminated from playoff contention with via a 5-2 loss to the Norfolk Tides on Tuesday night in Norfolk, Va.

The Tides jumped to an early lead in the second inning when Brandon Snyder hit a two-run homer off Gwinnett starter Jose Ortegano. Defensive miscues by the Braves then allowed Norfolk to score another run in the sixth. Norfolk tacked on two more runs in the seventh, putting the Braves in a five-run hole they could not overcome.

Jose Ortegano (3-10) was tabbed with the loss after giving up three runs (two earned), three hits and two walks in 5.2 innings. In relief Vladimir Nunez gave up two runs in 1.1 IP. Lee Hyde pitched a scoreless eighth inning, giving up only one hit.

G-Braves' Joe Thurston went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in the eighth inning. In his Gwinnett debut, Antoan Richardson also finished 2-for-4.

Gwinnett will play the second game of a short two game series in Norfolk at 7:15 p.m. on Wednesday. The G-Braves will send RHP Erik Cordier to the mound for his Triple-A debut against RHP Tim Bascom for the Tides. The game will be broadcast on the radio at WDUN-550 AM.
