GAINESVILLE - Hall County will be ramping up internal recycling efforts in county facilities and schools this fall using a quarter-million dollar federal grant.

The county received a federal grant to implement its Energy Efficiency Conservation Strategy, a plan for recycling and energy efficiency projects that the Board of Commissioners adopted Jan. 14.

Using grant funding, the Resource Recovery Division of Public Works has hired a part-time Recycling Coordinator to make these ideas a reality. Brandie Kochan's job will be to organize recycling programs in the county government and Hall County Schools, and to educate people about the importance of reduce, reuse, recycle.

This goes hand-in-hand with the county's new Environmental Management System, a cooperative, voluntary effort to coordinate green goals among public and private agencies in Hall County.

Total amount of the grant is just over $750,000, according to Hall County Natural Resources Coordinator Rick Foote. He says the recycling program in the schools will be launched on November 15, which is America Recycles Day. Workers will begin implementing other energy efficiency measures before that date.
